A sword’s hilt is essentially its handle assembly—the part gripped by the wielder for control and balance.

Typically, the hilt is divided into three main sections:

  1. Guard: Positioned between the grip and the blade, the guard is designed to protect the hand from sliding onto the blade and to block or deflect incoming blows.
  2. Grip: This is where the wielder’s hand actually holds the sword. Crafted from materials like leather, wood, or wire wrap, the grip offers comfort, stability, and a secure hold.
  3. Pommel: Located at the very end of the sword’s handle, the pommel helps balance the blade’s weight and keeps the user’s hand from slipping off the grip. It can also serve as a decorative element, reflecting cultural or personal style.
