Kitchen Knife Storage Options

Whether your knives are low-priced or super expensive, you’re always going to want them to last as long as possible. Cooks tend to forge an emotional relationship with their knives. They should be treated with respect. Properly storing your knives can greatly extend their lifespan.

Let’s take a look at some of the more common ways to store kitchen knives!

Knife Block

Knife blocks are probably what most people think of when it comes to storing sharp kitchen knives. They are comprised of cut-out pieces of wood, specially shaped to hold your knives.

Although knife blocks work pretty well, the main issue with knife blocks is that they are hard to clean. You should always make sure your knife is bone-dry before inserting it into a knife block.

Knife Bag

A knife bag is specialized. Most of them are able to keep your knives individually protected, and also make it easy to transport them to other locations. Don’t be mistaken. These aren’t only for travel. You can use one around the home to keep your knives in tip-top shape.

Drawer Tray

Most people nowadays probably keep their knives and other utensils in a specialized drawer tray. These are very convenient, but they lack any real protection for your knives, as all of your knives will be rubbing up against each other.

Knife Strip

Knife strips are a rather new invention. They are essentially a magnetic metal strip which you can suspend your knives onto. These are very convenient and don’t usually cause any damage to the knife blades.

Unfortunately, they can be a bit of a hazard, as your knives are openly exposed in your kitchen. These aren’t recommended for use around kids or pets.

Knife Sheaths

A sheath may seem traditional, but it’s one of the best ways to carry knives. The individual protection ensures that no damage will come to your treasured knives. Unfortunately, keeping all of your knives in individual sheaths can prove to be annoying, as you will have to constantly pull each one of out of their corresponding sheath.
