A duelist is traditionally defined as an individual who engages in formalized, one-on-one combat, typically governed by a strict code of honor or etiquette.

Duelists were not solely driven by bravado—these contests were considered a way to defend one’s reputation or settle matters of deep personal significance. In societies where honor was paramount, dueling was sometimes viewed as a legitimate means of resolving interpersonal disputes, particularly among the upper classes.

Although the sword has always been the weapon of choice for a classic duel, various firearms also gained popularity in certain regions and eras.
